When “hoping to help” hurts:What students, faculty, and staff need to know to avoid the pitfalls of global health volunteerism

As universities around the world tout the growing number of students seeking international experiences, we also face an international crisis where pre-professional and professional students seek out or are actively recruited to participate in global health volunteer experiences that all too often endanger the well-being of the host community members rather than improve health. While volunteers hope to help there is little evidence to prove that they are helping. What forces are driving this crisis? Further, what can students, faculty, and staff do to ameliorate harm to the comunitites they hope to serve? Join Dr. Lasker as she  discusses her research that outlines the roots of the problem and offers strategies that we can take to “do no harm.”
